Eczacıbaşı sponsors Turkey’s first competition for educational digital games!

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Eczacıbaşı Group has become the main sponsor of Turkey’s first competition for digital games that contribute to young students’ understanding of mathematics and the sciences. The KOD Awards for Educational Digital Games, as the competition is called, is being organized by the Turkish Informatics Foundation, of which the Eczacıbaşı Group is a co-founder and corporate sponsor.

The goals of the KOD Awards are threefold: to highlight the important contribution of information technologies to primary, middle school and high school level education; reinforce individual and institutional efforts to create ideas, develop applications and customize them; and motivate new generations of students. This is the first year of the awards, and with them, Turkey will for the first time be able to introduce educational games for mathematics and the sciences into its educational system.

The application process for the competition opened on 6 June 2017 and will continue through 30 November. Individuals or institutions may submit as many games or ideas for games as they want on the condition that they contribute to learning in mathematics and the sciences.

Faruk Eczacıbaşı, Vice Chairman of the Eczacıbaşı Group and President of the Turkish Informatics Foundation (TBV) announced the Group’s decision to become the main sponsor of the new competition as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations at a press conference in Kanyon. Drawing attention to TBV’s goal of transforming Turkey into an information-based society, Faruk Eczacıbaşı said, “We’re generally accustomed to seeing games as being antithetical to education. But with the level of technology we’ve acquired these days, games – particularly in the area of math and science education – do much more than help students memorize rules and formulas; they make it fun to use these rules and formulas. Math, science and technology become meaningful when they make sense. As they grow more meaningful, they become more interesting and appealing to students, and students improve their skills when they like what they’re doing. In this sense, gaming creates excellent opportunities for learning. Teaching these skills through digital games, which children and young people are used to playing, is a whole new approach to education. The Turkish Informatics Foundation, which has made it its mission to help Turkey become an information-based society, aims to make an innovative contribution to our nation’s educational level through the added value created by this new approach.”
